The Great Carbon Footprint Challenge

NOTE: This event took place during Lent 2011. See the Thank You message below

Each week during Lent we’ll be inserting the Carbon Footprint folder in the bulletin with a carbon “coupon” designed by the Discovery Quest children (three different designs each week).

The congregation will be challenged to change their individual/family footprint and make a commitment each week using the coupons. In other words, we’ll be “giving up” carbon for Lent.

Each worshipper will receive a coupon along with the “greening tips” folder in the weekly bulletin. They will be asked to complete the coupon, recording what they’ve stopped or started doing to reduce their carbon footprint. They will place the coupon on the offering plate or otherwise return it to the church. The coupons for each service will be tracked and recorded on two sets of giant thermometers in the Stewart East Hall. As the value of the coupons mounts, the “green” thermometer will rise and the “red” thermometer will fall.
At the end of Lent, we’ll see which group (1st or 2nd service) has the best greening record.

How will you reduce your carbon footprint?

See the Greening Tips for 50 ideas to get you started.

Print out your own carbon coupon, fill it in and bring it to church with you.

(The carbon coupon is a PDF file and will open in a new window)

A BIG Thank You!
Thank you to everyone who participated in the Lenten Carbon Footprint Challenge! It was a close race between the first and second service worshippers thanks to all your hard work! We hope that it raised your awareness of how little changes every day can make a big difference. And we hope that you keep working on reducing your carbon footprint!
Thank you so much,
The kids of Discovery Quest
