Library News

The Library Committee meets on the fourth Monday of every month (excluding July and August) in the Resource Centre.

Our function is to select new books, discard outdated material, and display and maintain the library.
It is intended to provide spiritual reference items to all members of the congregation.

The Library Committee members, invite you to come down to the Resource Centre on the lower level and become acquainted with your church library.

New books are on the library cart in the hall between Linda Wheler’s and John Derksen’s offices and in the Stewart East Hall on Sundays. Please feel free to borrow them. Simply print your name, phone number and date on the book card in the back of the book. Place the card in the silver bag on the side of the cart. We operate on the honour system – please return your selection within three weeks.

Library Survey
The library committee welcomes your suggestions, interests and needs to better serve our faith family.
Please take a moment to complete this survey. The results of the survey will prove very helpful to the Library Committee as we seek to define the desired role of our library for IUC.

Book Review

10 - Minute Time Outs for Busy Women
by Grace Fox

Dear Women of All Ages: Got Time? Your answer: Most likely, NOT! As author Grace Fox states, "Life is busy-- too busy", yet she asks all of us women to take at least 10 minutes of our hectic schedule to sit down and have a conversation with Jesus through her daily devotional book. In "10 - Minute Time Outs for Busy Women", Grace Fox helps give ourselves "time out"; with personal passages and encouraging stories of busy women she has encountered.  She includes a Bible verse each day for us to reflect on and suggests for us to write it on a sticky note and post it where we will see it. (I have taken this idea and typed the Bible Verses for the day on my Mobile Phone "sticky note" App, so when I need a minute to reflect throughout the day, I just turn on my phone to the verses on my App).

Fox also provides wonderful tasks and notes to do, pertaining to the topic of the day. She even includes a daily prayer for other women you love, who may need it. "10 - Minute Time Outs for Busy Women" is a great way to further build your relationship with Jesus Christ and gain serenity amongst the frantic and often organized - chaos which describes most of our lives. Happy Reading Dear Women!

Book Review by Hiromi Okuyama

Come to the library and look for this book and others like it with the spine label number 242. To make it easier to find, the shelf is labelled “Devotionals”.

Outstanding Service
Faith Formation presented a plaque to honour Clarice Giffen for her 12 years as Library Chair. It is on display in the library on the lower level (directly under John Derksen’s office). We welcome everyone to come by to see it and why not sign out a book while you’re there!

Did you know that the library keeps current and past copies of The United Church Observer on its shelves for your reading pleasure and information? These copies are to remain in the library for your enjoyment and are not for circulation.

If anyone wishes to request a certain book or video, please speak to anyone on the Library Team: Muriel Chaprin, Sally Goodwillie, Lynn Morrison, Hiromi Okuyama and Dorothea Vickers.

Once again we are collecting used devotionals and cancelled postage stamps for the Christian Mission. It is their goal to recycle these items, along with Bibles and books, to Christian workers in Third World countries. There is a box for your discarded devotionals under that literature table that displays Islington’s worship bulletins across from the Reception Room. A box for used stamps is on the adjacent literature cabinet.

Warning from the Library Police!!!
The Library Committee is discussing the need to create an “overdue list” for a number of DVDs and videos that are long overdue. Take advantage of this amnesty period to return any overdue items that you may have.
