Don Banks Music Awards 2012

2012 Finalists

Islington United Church and its music staff are delighted to announce the second year of The Don Banks Music Awards. This festival has been established by Don Banks to unite two of his passions – the love of music and the nurture of young people.

1. These awards are open to candidates who
   • Are 10 to 16 years of age
   • Are active in a school music program and/or who study privately.
   • Live in Etobicoke or east of Hwy 10 in Mississauga
   • Did not win the competition in 2011.
     
     
2. The competition falls into four main categories: Vocal, Piano, Strings, and Winds/Percussion.
   
   
3. Each category is subdivided into two groups:
   • Students who take private lessons
   • Students who do not take private lessons
     
     
4. Candidates must complete an application form, to be downloaded from the Islington United Church web site after December 1 (www.islingtonunited.org).     (pdf file opens in a new window)
   • Candidates must include a letter of support from their teacher or mentor.
   • Candidates may choose to submit a CD (audio only) with their application or give notice in the application that they wish to perform a live audition. Any genre of music is acceptable.
   • If the candidate wishes to submit a CD (audio only), the following guidelines apply:
     • Clearly label the CD with:
       1. Your full name
       2. Names of the composers
       3. Titles of the compositions
     • Only an audio CD is acceptable.
     • The recording must be of good quality and recorded in one continuous “take” without splices or edits of any kind.
     • The recording may be accompanied or unaccompanied.
     • The recording will not be returned to you unless you request its return in writing. Please include this request with your original CD submission
   • Live auditions will take place on the morning of February 11 at Islington United Church.
   • For the recording/audition, candidates will present two pieces in contrasting styles.
     
     
5. Applications must be received at the church office, delivered either by mail or by hand, on or before January 25, 2012.
   
   
6. A short list of successful candidates will be posted on the church web site on March 10, 2012.
   
   
7. Short-listed candidates will be invited to perform in the Don Banks Music Festival at Islington United Church on March 24.
   • Finalists will be asked to perform one of the pieces from their audition/recording, no more than 6 minutes in length.
   • If a church accompanist is required, piano music must arrive at the church by January 26.
   • Winners will be announced at the end of the program.
     
     
8. On the following day, Sunday, March 25, four special winners, selected by the committee the previous evening, will be invited to perform for the Islington United Church congregation, and Don Banks will present up to 8 awards of $200 each.
